The crew of the USS Starship Enterprise is again put to the test in the latest Star Trek movie when bad guy John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch) shows what a really rough character he is by devastating Starfleet and leaving Earth virtually defenseless against his attacks.
Fortunately, the Enterprise is there to answer Earth’s distress call. Under the courageous leadership of Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), the crew rallies in the face of extreme danger. And since the crew consists of such notable Star Trek members as Dr. Spock (Zachery Quinto), Dr. “Bones” McCoy (Karl Urban), Lt. Sulu (John Cho), Lt. Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Ensign Chekov (Anton Yelchin), and Lt. Commander “Scotty” Scott (Simon Pegg), there is definitely enough brain power available to get some interesting retaliation going.
But the evil-doer seems bent on doing more than just destroying the Enterprise and its crew. A villain who is apparently unstoppable, he unleashes a seeming enraged vendetta against Captain Kirk himself, which only adds to the depth of this sci-fi thriller. Because when it gets personal, the action goes up quite a few hot and heavy notches.
If you remember the old Star Trek series, when William Shatner played Captain Kirk, and Leonard Nimoy played Dr. Spock, then you’re sure to be agog at the action in this movie. Special effects have come a long way, baby, and Paramount Pictures made good use of them in this flick.
And if you love the special effects in the movie, just check out the Star Trek Into Darkness tees we’ve got on our site. Each one will remind you of the thrills, the action, and the struggle to defeat an enemy such as the Enterprise crew has never before encountered. Certainly one of them will be something you want to buy and wear, or to give as a gift to someone who’s a real Trekkie.
So raise your eyes heavenward and say a silent, “Beam me up, Scotty,” in fond remembrance of a tremendously cool movie. Just try to limit your space travel should Scotty hear you and give you a beam up. Those guys don’t give frequent flyer rewards.
Who hasn’t heard of Superman? Who isn’t familiar with his history? Well, settle back, fans, because you’ve never heard it told this way before.
The new Warner Brothers Man of Steel movie takes a darker, more edgy approach to the Clark Kent/Superman/Kal-el story. You won’t find Jimmy Olsen in this flick for any comic relief. No, the comic book version that your grandparents recall, and even the TV series starring George Reeves, has been updated and given teeth.
The basics are still there, though. Superman (Henry Cavill) is found by Martha and Jonathan Kent (Diane Lane and Kevin Costner) and they become his parents. No dysfunctional family life here; their son Clark is raised with love and taught to respect others and their rights.
After Clark’s grown and is working at the Daily Planet with Lois Lane (Amy Adams) and Perry White (Laurence Fishburne), enter a menace to every man, woman and child on Earth, General Zod (Michael Shannon), also a survivor of the planet Krypton’s explosion. Along with him to wreak havoc on Earth is Faora (Antje Traue), another survivor. Zod is as evil as Superman is good, and as endowed with the same super powers, so for Superman the ensuing battle won’t be a simple matter of looking through walls to find the bank robbers or flying through the air to catch fleeing kidnappers.
Upon its release, the movie will be shown in the conventional mode as well as in 3D and at IMAX theaters, so you’ll have to figure out which way you want to see it — or see it in all three versions and impress your friends.
And if all that action gets you really revved up, you might decide you need a t-shirt that expresses your “way to go, Superman!” attitude. If so, we’ve probably got just the shirt you’re looking for. So take a look (and you won’t have to have x-ray vision for it, either), and pick out something from our Man of Steel collection.
Or if you haven’t seen the movie yet, or you just love Superman, grab yourself a shirt and feel the power. Kryptonite-free, of course.
Just when Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) thought he could enjoy some down time with his gal pal Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) following his exploits in The Avengers, everything in his personal life is put at the mercy of the merciless Mandarin (Ben Kingsley). And thus the latest tale of Iron Man begins.
Walt Disney Studios brings us the latest installment of our hero, pitting Iron Man against Mandarin in a test of wills that stretches Stark’s resolve and instinctive action to the breaking point. With so much hanging in the balance, he must not only match wits with Mandarin, but he has to be resourceful enough to defeat the villain. Because this time, if he slips up, he could lost much more than he could ever recoup: he could lose Pepper.
As in the previous two Iron Man movies, the action is hot and hard-hitting. Who could expect anything less from such a hero? And there is also depth to the character that doesn’t leave you wondering if he is only a cardboard figure who just stepped out of the funny pages. No, Stark has qualms about his abilities, wondering if he’s the one behind his previous successes, or if it’s that iron armor he wears, showing us that even a guy who can take out the bad guys without getting himself taken down can have self-esteem issues.
Most of the film was shot in North Carolina, with some being done in Los Angeles, Florida, and China. Jon Favreau and Don Cheadle are back again as Happy Hogan and James Rhodes, and there are several newcomers to the cast, namely Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, and James Badge Dale. Wow, what a lineup, huh?
And get this, gang: the movie’s in 3D. That’s over two hours (129 minutes, if you want to get technical) of up close and personal action the way only Iron Man can deliver it. Not too shabby, huh? So if you want to do it up right, get yourself an Iron Man shirt and get in line for the movie. Just save some popcorn for me.
It certainly is promising to be a Superhero year at the movie theater. Big ones coming out in a fast and furious pace:
1. Iron Man 3
Tony Stark as portrayed so well by Robert Downey Jr as the self-proclaimed “genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist,” is back in theaters in Iron Man 3 on May 3. This time he is getting beat up by supervillain the Mandarin, brought to the big screen for the first time by Ben Kingsley. He likes his jokes but this time is in risk of losing everything — perhaps including his girlfriend and levelheaded counterpart Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow).
2. Man of Steel
Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel is set go off on June 14. I have been reading mixed opinions on this movie. It appears that Zack Snyder is covering his story with a soft and human-like lens. Henry Cavill’s suit seems like higher tech than the expensive spandex version in earlier superman movies.
3. The Wolverine
Hugh Jackman returns as the mutant with the adamantium claws in “X-Men” movie set in Japan. Directed by James Mangod, who has movies like “Girl, Interrupted” and the underrated Western “3:10 to Yuma.” This is a first superhero movie by the acclaimed director and i will wait to see it before we count it in all-timers. The trailer gives the indication of a action filled film though. Bring it on!
4. Thor – The Dark World
The hammer-wielding God of Thunder is back in “Thor: The Dark World.” The movie pits the short-tempered Asgardian prince against an ancient race of Dark Elves, led by the villain Malekith. We do not know yet how it will turn out in the movie, but Marcel Comics usually portrays him as a smart, fast super villain with many tricks. I think this movie will be a blast!
